What is Bar Mitzvah?

Bar Mitzvah is a Hebrew phrase that translates into “son of the commandment.” It refers to Connor reaching the age where he is welcomed into the Jewish community with new religious privileges and responsibilities as an adult. As part of the bar mitzvah ceremony, Connor will help lead the morning Shacharit service and read from the Torah, which he has been studying to do for the past year.

What happens during the Bar Mitzvah service? Do I need to know Hebrew?

Along with the Rabbi, Connor will help conduct the morning service, including chant the b’rachot over the Torah, read a section from the Torah portion for that week, chant the b’rachot for the haftarah, read a section from the haftarah, and deliver a speech. The readings and service are done in both Hebrew and English so you will be able to follow along.

What’s the attire?

For the morning service at Temple de Hirsch Sinai, please dress modestly – think dress, skirt and dressy top, or slacks and a button-down shirt (suit and/or tie optional). For the evening celebration, we recommend cocktail and party attire…sneakers welcomed!

What should I know about parking?

There is plenty of free parking in the Temple de Hirsch Sinai parking lot. For the evening party, there is complimentary parking at the CornerStone parking garage (3524 Stone Way North). The garage is located below the new Brooks building at the corner of Stone Way North and 36th Street, just half a block south of Stone Way Auto.
